Trinity Lutheran Church (WELS, Woodbridge, VA) Weekly sermons from Trinity Lutheran Church, Woodbridge, VA

February 19, 2017

The sermon for the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany, February 19, 2017. The sermon text is based on Matthew 5:13-16.

Today's Focus: Let your light shine!  Jesus tells us:  You are...so be.  You are the light of the world, so be light for the earth.  You are the salt of the earth, so be salt for it.  Our calling as sons of God means our lives will reflect our new status, and the world around us wil be blessed by us.

The sermon for the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany, February 12, 2017. The sermon text is based on Matthew 5:1-12

Today's Focus: Trust in God's strength! Jesus' message to us this morning might seem to be espousing a Christianity imbued with fatalism at best or defeatism at worst. Look closer, however, and see what he says. The weaker you are, the stronger God is in your life. The weaker you are now, the more ready you are to trust in a future reward. Look at the past acts of God's grace and you will find many reasons to trust his strength in the face of adversity, persecution or sorrow.

The sermon for the Third Sunday after Epiphany, February 5, 2017. The sermon text is based on Isaiah 8:19 - 9:2

Today's Focus: Jesus appears as the light that shines in the darkness. Dark places remain covered in the shadow of sin and unbelief. But Jesus shines his light by preaching repentance and the good news of the nearing kingdom, and he invites us to follow him.

January 29, 2017

Our celebration of the Epiphany-the revelation of Jesus, the Light of the world-continues with this Sermon.  Jesus is the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the World," as John the Baptist testifies in John 1:29-41.  That truth changes who you are and where you are going!

The sermon for the Second Sunday after Epiphany, January 22, 2017. The sermon text is based on Matthew 3:13-17

Today's Focus: During the Epiphany season we want to get to know Jesus. This Sunday we get to know him by baptism, both his and ours. The baptism of Christ as the inauguration of his ministry is the them of the day. But as we remember Jesus' baptism we also focus on our own baptisms, by which we are connected to him and his saving work. This work was done on behalf of all people and has the Father's full approval and delight.

January 15, 2017
The sermon for Epiphany Sunday, January 15, 2017. The sermon text is based on Matthew 2:1-12.

Today's Focus: Joy to the world, the Lord is come!  This morning we gather for the Festival of Epiphany which celebrates Jesus as Savior of the whole world.  The Festival of the Epiphany of our Lord is the second oldest festival celebrated by the Church, dating to the second century.  The Eastern Church commemorates the birth of Christ on this day, but the Western Church remembers it as the "Gentile Christmas" and celebrates Jesus who appeared as the Word for the world.

January 8, 2017
The sermon for the Second Sunday after Christmas, January 8, 2017. The sermon text is based Galatians 4:4-7

Today's Focus: God cares for His children. He cared for his children, the nation of Israel - though they were rebellious. He card for His Son, Jesus - though Herod raged against him. He even cares for his newly adopted children - though we do not deserve it. God cared for us by sending his Son to deliver us from the corruption of sin and transform us into his own sons and daughters. That work of Christ gives us peace that only children can have.

December 25, 2016
The sermon for Christmas Eve, December 24, 2016. The sermon text is based on Luke 2:8-20

This evening's Focus: Before you had bought one present this Christmas or any Christmas, God decided to give you the greatest gift that could be given.  He came into this world of sin and death, and by his perfect life and death on the cross, purchased for you the gifts of forgiveness and eternal life.  On this night we ponder how he came to our earth, and the wonderful free gifts he brings to us as we contemplate sections of Luke chapter 2.  In the words of the shepherds, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about!".

December 18, 2016
The sermon for the Fourth Sunday in Advent, December 18, 2016. The sermon text is based Matthew 1:18-25

Today's Focus: In the Bible, names often have special meaning. In the book of Isaiah, the prophet foretold that the coming Messiah would be named "Immanuel". That name means "God is with us". How meaningful! It describes perfectly what we find in Bethlehem's manger: God, wrapped in flesh, that he might dwell with us in our home. And because of what Immanuel did in his death and resurrection, we can joyfully look forward to the day when we will go to dwell with him in his home.

December 11, 2016
The sermon for the Third Sunday in Advent, December 11, 2016. The sermon text is based Isaiah 35:1-10

Today's Focus: Rejoice! Jesus comes for you! The third Sunday of Advent, marked by a pink candle in the Advent wreath, is traditionally known as "Gaudete" or "Rejoicing" Sunday. At this part of the season, we can feel Christmas quickly approaching, therefore our anticipation and rejoicing are raised. This morning, we will be encouraged to rejoice even in the face of suffering, for our Savior promises to deliver us. Rejoice and worship Him!
