Trinity Lutheran Church (WELS, Woodbridge, VA) Weekly sermons from Trinity Lutheran Church, Woodbridge, VA

April 9, 2017
The sermon for Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017. The sermon text is based on Matthew 21:1-11

Today's Focus: From his birth to his death, Jesus demonstrates remarkable humility. He is King of kings. And yet when born into our world, he did not have a golden crib, but only a manger. When he rides into the royal city of Jerusalem as a king, it is not on a stallion, but a little donkey foal. And when he, as Lord of Lords, mounts his position of authority, it is not a throne, but a cross. Why would one so great be so unspeakable humble? And what is there for us to learn in his humility? Come and listen to His Word today!

April 2, 2017
The sermon for The Fifth Sunday in Lent, April 2, 2017. The sermon text is based on Mark 14:32-38

Today's Focus: Repent: Turn to Jesus; When You Face Temptations. Every time we pray the Lord's Prayer, we ask that God would "lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." This morning we will be encouraged to look to His strength, not ours, to stand strong in times of temptation. We will be directed to His amazing grace and free forgiveness when we succumb to temptation, and to His certain promises to strengthen us when we feel weak.

The sermon for The Fourth Sunday in Lent, March 26, 2017. The sermon text is based on Luke 7:36-50

Today's Focus: Repent: Turn to Jesus; He Changes Your Life. Our faith in Christ's blood has saved us. Our faith in Christ's blood has changed us. We are given a new status: forgiven, chosen, and holy to God. We are given a new purpose: to declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. In faith, turn to Jesus; he changes everything about your life now and forever! All through Jesus. Always through Jesus. Only through Jesus.

March 19, 2017
The sermon for The Third Sunday in Lent, March 19, 2017. The sermon text is based on Luke 23:32-34

Today's Focus: Repent: Turn to Jesus; He Longs to Forgive You. There is no sin you commit that Jesus' sacrifice does not remit. There is no guilt that you bear that Jesus' cross does not lift. There is no past that Jesus did not die to forgive and forget. Jesus' atonement for the sin of the world never changes! It is always accomplished, always real, always free, always yours through the gift of faith in his blood! So turn, in faith, to Jesus; he longs to forgive you!

March 12, 2017
The sermon for The Second Sunday in Lent, March 12, 2017. The sermon text is based on Luke 23:35-43.

Today's Focus: Repent: Turn to Jesus; He Holds the Key to Heaven. God is very clear in His Word: to get into heaven on your own, you need to be perfect. To have done more good than bad, or to simply try really hard to do right, or to do some amount of moral or social good won't cut it. Be perfect, and heaven is yours. Of course, that is bad news for us all. God's Word tells us what we already know: all have sinned and fall short of this perfection. The solution? Look to Jesus. He lived perfectly for us, died for our sins, and rose from the dead to freely give us what we could never earn: heaven. He is thekey. He is the way. Turn to him.

March 5, 2017
The sermon for The First Sunday in Lent, March 5, 2017. The sermon text is based on Matthew 27:1-5

Today's Focus: Repent: Turn to Jesus! Do Not Turn Away. When we feel the guilt of our sin and shame, our instinct might be to turn from God and hide. But this morning, we will be encouraged to turn toward him in repentance and receive the full and free forgiveness that only he can bring. Do not turn away from Jesus, he longs to forgive you, heal you and restore you!

March 1, 2017
The sermon forAsh Wednesday, March 1, 2017. The sermon text is based on Luke 18:9-14

Today's Focus: Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, the Christian's 40-day journey with the Lord to the cross and tomb, preparing for the proclamation of Easter. In the Bible, "sackcloth and ashes" were often worn to signify deep mourning or repentance. On this evening, we remember our deep need for repentance and turn in humility to God in repenetance. We look to him alone for forgiveness.

February 26, 2017

The sermon for February 26, 2017. The sermon text is based on Matthew 17:1-8.

Today's Focus: Jesus appears as the Son of God in glory. We come to a "hinge" in our worship focus today. In Epiphany we have seen Jesus reveal himself as the promised Savior. In the next weeks of Lent, we will see this revealed Savior suffer for the sins of the world. But before we ponder this ultimate act of humiliation, we pause this morning to gaze upon Jesus in an ultimate act of glorification. His face is "transfigured" before Peter, James and John as he shows some of the glory that is his as true God. Behold your Beautiful Savior!

February 19, 2017

The sermon for the Fifth Sunday after Epiphany, February 19, 2017. The sermon text is based on Matthew 5:13-16.

Today's Focus: Let your light shine!  Jesus tells us:  You are...so be.  You are the light of the world, so be light for the earth.  You are the salt of the earth, so be salt for it.  Our calling as sons of God means our lives will reflect our new status, and the world around us wil be blessed by us.

February 12, 2017
The sermon for the Fourth Sunday after Epiphany, February 12, 2017. The sermon text is based on Matthew 5:1-12

Today's Focus: Trust in God's strength! Jesus' message to us this morning might seem to be espousing a Christianity imbued with fatalism at best or defeatism at worst. Look closer, however, and see what he says. The weaker you are, the stronger God is in your life. The weaker you are now, the more ready you are to trust in a future reward. Look at the past acts of God's grace and you will find many reasons to trust his strength in the face of adversity, persecution or sorrow.
