Today's Focus: The closest we can get to a mirror of the love of God for us is the mirror of the love that he wants us to have for one another in the family. The goal of family members is to reflect the love of God for us in self-giving love for one another in the family. How tragic that in our society such a mirror is clouded indeed! There is much to repent of and much to strive toward.

Today's Focus: The gifts of God are so rich and varied that the devil uses that very generosity in God to stir up jealousy and envy in us. Expect it in others; find it in yourself as well! That weakness makes it crystal clear that our own flesh will often give us much more difficulty and anguish than the hostility or the persecution from the world.

The sermon for Sunday, September 30, 2018, is based on Mark 8:27-35
Today's Focus: Those who confess that Jesus is the Christ and not just another great prophet or teacher or role model for good living must let even this truth penetrate: Christ came to suffer, Christ came to die; he did it in perfect obedience to his Father; he did it in perfect love for us and for our salvation. His obedience and love were not cheap. Ours should not be either. We are not saved to sin all the more. We are rescued for life and for life eternal but only in the procession of cross bearers following in his footsteps. Come and worship him who bore the cross for you, and who will empower you to carry whatever crosses come your way.

Today's Focus: Unbelief mocks and says that if God did all things well and was the source of all good, then he shouldn't allow misery and need in the first place. But especially in need and suffering God does all things well; that truth is the center of the Christian's quiet confidence. It is the reason for our hope based on the promise of God and earned for us by the work of Christ and its eternal consequence for us.

We will see that our hearts are inclined to sin by nature, but that God has forgiven our sin in Jesus and sends His Holy Spirit, working through the Word, to bring new life to our hearts and new motives to our minds. Come and see how God heals our hearts and creates new hearts within us!

Today's Focus: It is not only the outsider who turns aside from the Wisdom which is Christ. Many who have heard the Word with us also go away when some part of it conflicts with their own thinking. The need to submit one's own reason and will to the Word of God is not a onetime thing. It is a sacrifice that needs to be renewed often, in every stage of life, as new threats come that oppose Wisdom and its expression in the Word. May God empower you to believe that his Word and Wisdom are eternal life!

The sermon for Sunday, September 2, 2018, is based on Proverbs 9:1-6
Today's Focus: The wisdom of God is not merely more clever than the wisdom of the philosopher or anyone else in this world. It is altogether other and unique. It is so powerful that it overcomes the death of unbelief and the arrogance of fallen reason. Therefore, we gladly bring to God all of our own wisdom and our own opinions and lay them at the foot of the cross. We gladly go to war against all of our own thoughts that contradict any part of his Word. For all other bread for the soul perishes in its use, and those who eat it perish with it. But the gospel provides a feast of truth and wisdom that gives life and salvation.

Today's Focus: Jesus encourages us to drive away despair in our lives by listening to his life giving promises. But when we pay more attention to our own feelings or reason than his promises, it is easy to become depressed and fall into despair. If we only rely on what our limited eyes can see or limited minds can sense, we might miss the Bread of Life that will feed our souls forever. Come and listen to his promises and feast on the Bread of Life, which drives despair away.
