The Sermon for Sunday, February 16, 2020, is based on 1 Corinthians 2:6-13

Today's Focus: The Savior's Sermon: Live a holy life!  Jesus came to free us from sin.  He did not come to free us to sin.  The commands in the lessons today (Deuteronomy 30:15-20, 1 Corinthians 2:6-13 and Matthew 5:21-37) remind us just how holy our God is, and their dire warnings remind us just how holy he wants us to be.  After examining our lives, we must despair, but the Verse of the Day reminds us to flee to Christ who has the words of life. Then the Prayer of the Day asks that we might be given the grace to both know and do what pleases him.

Today's Focus: Jesus appears as the light that shines in the darkness.  Dark places covered in the shadow of sin and unbelief.  Now there are, however, bright places, too, and there you find God's children.  Jesus shines his light by preaching repentance and the good news of the nearing kingdom, and he invited us to follow him to a life illumined by him.  Following him means living in the joy of freedom and walking in the light of love for God and brother.

Today's Focus: Jesus appears as Savior of the Nations.  The Church remembers January 6th as the Twelfth Day which closes the Christmas season.  The Festival of the Epiphany of our Lord is the second oldest festival celebrated by the Church, dating to the second century.  The eastern Church commemorates the birth of Christ on this day, but the Western Church remembers it as the "Gentile Christmas" and celebrates Jesus who appeared as the Word for the world.

Today's Focus: God cares for his sons.  He cared for his son, the nation of Israel-though they were rebellious.  He cared for his Son Jesus-though Herod raged against him.  He even cares for his newly adopted sons-though we do not deserve it.  God cared for us by sending his Son to deliver us from the corruption of sin and transform us into sons just like Jesus.  That work of Christ gives us peace that only sons can have.

Today's Focus: In the Bible, names often have special meaning.  In the book of Isaiah, the prophet foretold that the coming Messiah would be named "Immanuel."  That name means "God is with us."  How meaningful! It describes perfectly what we find in Bethlehem's manger: God, wrapped in flesh, that he might dwell with us in our home.  And because of what Immanuel did in his death and resurrection, we can joyfully look forward to the day when we will go to dwell with him in his home.

Today's Focus: Rejoice!  Jesus comes for you!  The third Sunday of Advent, marked by a pink candle in the Advent wreath, is traditionally known as "Gaudete" or "Rejoicing" Sunday.  At this part of the season, we can feel Christmas quickly approaching, therefore our anticipation and rejoicing are raised.  This morning, we will rejoice in Word and song.

The sermon for Sunday,December 8, 2019, is based on Romans 15:4-6

 

Today's Focus: Prepare the way with sincere repentance.  When Jesus came into the world the first time, God raised up John the Baptist to prepare people to meet him.  John preached a powerful message of repentance, and it brought about a renewal of life.  People ran to Jesus, the bringer of salvation.  Jesus is going to come into the world a second time, and we are to prepare the same way-with sincere repentance.  For the unrepentant, Christ's return will mean an eternity of sorrow.  But for God's repentant people, Christ's return will mean an eternity in his glorious kingdom.

Today's Focus: Prepare, for the Lord will come again unexpectedly.  There are no surprise with Christmas.  We know exactly when December 25th will arrive.  We can calculate the very minute.  That is not the case with Christ's second coming.  We have no idea when it will take place.  It could be ten-thousand years away.  It could be in the next ten minutes.  But, God kept his promise to send Christ the first time; therefore, we have confident faith he will keep his promise to send Christ again.  Because we do not know when that will be, we must always be prepared.
